How to change your Instagram password without your old password

Googling “How to change your Instagram password without your old password” is probably one of the most frequently asked questions since Google search became a thing. Needing to change your password because you forgot it is practically a cliche. And yet we still need to be guided on how to do it for security reasons. Every time a password change is needed, the process has to be unique for each individual to preserve the account’s integrity. For Instagram, here are the basic steps to change your password on an Android device.

  1. Open the Instagram app.
  2. On the login screen, tap “Get help logging in” below “Log in.”
  3. Enter username, email or phone, or tap “Log in with Facebook.”
  4. Tap “Next,” and follow the on-screen instructions.

Take note that if you use Facebook to log into your Instagram account, you can only change your password through Facebook settings, not through Instagram. Additionally, Instagram no longer allows a single login for multiple accounts. If you did this previously and need to change your password, the new password will still log you into all the linked accounts. If you have multiple accounts with different logins, you can select the account that needs a new password by tapping and holding the account icon to make the different accounts appear.
