Reasons One Would Want To Archive an IG Account

Instagram’s archive feature allows users to temporarily hide posts from their feeds without permanently deleting them. Most people only use it to hide certain content, depending on whether they want those posts live on their feed. But sometimes, even seasoned creators can get overwhelmed by the app and get the urge to archive their entire profile.

And this isn’t the least bit surprising. Many people are starting to take a backseat from social media. The Wall Street Journal reports that fewer people post online now, especially since bots and misinformation make it less enjoyable.

So, why would an Instagram creator want to put their career on hold and archive their page? Here are some of the reasons:

  • Rethinking overall aesthetic and content strategy: If you want to refresh the look of your feed, you might want to archive your page while you plan your next moves.
  • As a mental health break: Being chronically online can be fun, but sometimes, it’s incredibly draining. Archiving your profile and taking a step back is a must if your mental health and wellness needs it.
  • Avoiding stalkers: Hiding your profile from the public eye for a while can throw off any stalkers who have been bothering you.

Can You Archive an Instagram Account?

But now we get to the real question—can you archive an Instagram account in the first place? Technically, no, you can’t. There’s no feature that lets you archive your profile by command.

Thankfully, there are options you can consider if you’re serious about hiding your page for a while without deleting it. You can either temporarily disable your account or mass archive your posts until your profile is completely blank. Let’s talk about each option in depth.

How To Archive Instagram Account by Temporarily Disabling It

Disabling or deactivating your Instagram account is a great way to hide it from the public eye. While your profile is deactivated, no one can find your page on the app. It’s temporary only though, so you can reactivate your page whenever you want, and all your content will be restored.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to archive an Instagram account through temporary deactivation:

1. Open the Instagram app and click the profile icon at the bottom-right of the page.

2. Click the hamburger menu (three lines) at the top of your profile.

3. Select Accounts Center.

9. Select one of the listed reasons why you want to deactivate your account.

10. Confirm your decision to disable your page.

The Cons of Disabling Your Account

The thing about disabling your account is that you won’t be able to go on Instagram, even just to browse. The second you log back into the app, Instagram restores your profile. You can’t just freely watch other people’s Reels or DM friends.

Another downside of disabling your account is that Instagram automatically deletes all your existing comments on other users’ posts. It’s like you never even existed! But don’t worry; these comments will be restored as soon as you reactivate your page.

Disabling your page temporarily might be a convenient way to run away from the app. But in many cases, you might be better off archiving Instagram account content to clear out your feed. That way, you can still at least use your account to lurk on the app, but with a blank profile.

How To Mass Archive All Your Content on Instagram

Use the archive option to your advantage and hide your feed content in bulk. Here’s how to mass archive content like IG photos, for example, step by step:

1. In your Instagram settings, tap Your activity.

2. Click Posts to see all your feed content

3. Tap Select at the top of the page. Then, tap on every post you want to hide (aka all of them).

4. Click Archive at the bottom.

At this point, your feed should look spick and span, without any content (unless you left unarchived posts on purpose). Just remember to hide or delete your Story Highlights, too, so your profile is completely empty.

After Archiving All Instagram Posts, How Do You See Them Again?

So, you’re done archiving all Instagram posts but want to see your hidden content. You can find all your archived posts in—drum roll, please—your Instagram post archive. Here’s how to access it:

1. On your profile, tap the three horizontal lines at the top to go to your settings.

2. Tap Archive under the “How you use Instagram” section. This brings you to the archive of Instagram, where you’ll see all your archived content.

3. Switch between your post and Story archive at the top of the page.
